McDonald's!!! It took a lot of wandering to find this McDonalds. I thought I was going to have to give up until I spotted the sign through a passageway. |

The Austrian countryside as seen from the other side of the fortress. |
Painted cow "The only time the Hohensalzburg fortress was ever under any kind of siege was during the Peasant Wars, when peasants surrounded the fortress in an attempt to starve the archbishop out. When the stubborn archbishop had only one cow left, he painted the remaining beast with different spots on both sides and paraded him back and forth along the castle wall in distinct view of the peasants below. Since the peasants, as the saying goes, were simple-minded folk, they believed that the archbishop had a great reserve of food and decided to give up their assault." (From the Let's Go guide to Austria and Switzerland) |
Another view of Salzburg from the fortress. The wind coming through it provided quite a relief from the summer heat. |

Mozart's Birthplace Born here in 1756, Mozart is one of Austria's favorite sons. In Innsbruck, I spotted a plaque recognizing a place that he just happened to live in for a few years. |
My hotel!!! This was one of the best deals I could find online, and I can't imagine being more impressed with it. |
